Newswise Community

Newswise is designed to provide journalists with the easiest, most efficient, and most effective access to research news. Our services combine the power of web databases with the convenience of email. We try to help journalists find and manage the information they need. As a journalist, you may subscribe (free) to wires that conform to your schedule and beat. However, we urge you also to use the website resources described below.

Newswise Wires

Our email wires are sent only to journalists who have requested them. News is also included in a full-text-searchable database where it remains available for years. The news is categorized into one of four libraries:

- science research news
- medical research news
- business research news
- research and feature news covering social and behavioral sciences, liberal arts and humanities, education, and popular culture

A subscribing reporter receives via email the Daily Wire or biweekly virtual wires, which list the most recent news. Each wire includes a summary and direct link to the full text of each release. Samples are available for review: MedWire, SciWire, LifeWire, BizWire. The Newswise Daily Wire, designed for journalists on daily deadline, contains all stories contributed the previous day.

In the news libraries, reporters may browse the most recent news releases by category, or query the online archive using a sophisticated, full-text-searchable database from which news releases may be retrieved by topic, source institution, or other criteria.

Newswise also hosts thematic Special Wires that focus on seasonal or especially newsworthy issues. Thematic Wire sample: Matters of the Heart Wire.

Newswise Media Subscribers

Newswise media subscribers can feel secure using Newswise. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your identifying information, such as name, address, phone number, and email address. Personal information you provide us is kept in strict confidence.

We require certain information in order to credential users as members of the news media. Media are granted special privileges, access, and free services we offer, such as wires, PressPasses, and the use of our query service. We must make sure that all users with privileged access are members of the media — this requires information and sometimes corroborative evidence, such as clips. We do not sell, rent, loan, give, or trade your name, email address, or any other personally identifying information to others.

Newswise Participating Institutions

More than 400 higher education and research institutions participate in this collaborative resource by providing their knowledge-based news. In the past year, Newswise distributed more than 5,000 stories to our subscribing journalists. Newswise participating institutions range from large research universities and major national associations to liberal arts colleges.

Embargoed News

Newswise provides full-time, professional journalists with access to embargoed news from major journals, as well as from national and international meetings. To grant you access to embargoed news, we require recent clippings to verify your status as a journalist.

News Archives

All news releases are posted to our archive and remain accessible for years. Journalists use this as a database of experts and background information. The powerful search function allows you to retrieve stories by any keyword, source name, subject, date, or institution. Rather than offering simply a keyword search, our archive is full-text searchable — each word in the full text of the release is indexed for searching.

Find an Expert

Another way we help reporters is via our expert query system. Reporters may request experts in one of four subject areas: SciNews, MedNews, BizNews, or LifeNews. The requests should include a thorough and precise description of the expert needed, deadlines, and contact information. Newswise forwards the requests via email to the appropriate participating higher education and research institutions, and their experts or contacts reply directly to the journalist.

Newswise and ProfNet are collaborating, and one form of this is to provide journalists access to ProfNet's expert search services. Via ProfNet, you may send a query to public information officers representing 800 colleges and universities. Most are US- and UK-based, but the distribution also reaches academic institutions in Germany, Sweden, Africa, and Latin America. You also may search a database of 15,000 expert profiles and subscribe to expert tip sheets. Register or log in.

You may access all of these functions on our Expert Finder Tools page.

Newswise Contact Directory

The Newswise Contact Directory is a database of universities, colleges, and other research organizations. It is designed to help journalists find media contacts. This tool contains contact information for media relations personnel and websites, and may be searched by institution name, location, subject area, or institution type.

Calendars and Awards

Newswise maintains online calendars for scientific and medical meetings. You may visit the calendar to review upcoming meetings.

Newswise also maintains a Guide to Awards and a Guide to Grants and Fellowships. These include descriptions, as well as deadline and contact information, for awards, grants, and fellowships for journalists.
